Routes to Acquire Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

To acquire Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England, you typically need to complete a recognized teacher training program. For someone in Nigeria, you must have acquired a registered-teacher status by registering with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria TRCN, got their certificate and license.

There are several routes you can take, including:

1. University-led training: Completing a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at a university.These programs typically combine academic study with practical teaching experience in schools. You should also participate in community development services within your school.
2. School-led training: Participating in school-based training programs such as School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) or School Direct.In school-led training, you’ll have to spend more time in the classroom from the outset, gaining practical experience under the guidance of experienced teachers while also completing academic study.
3. Assessment Only route: This route is for experienced teachers who don’t need further training. You’ll be assessed on your teaching experience and competence against the Teachers’ Standards. They would also assess all the programs, workshop, seminars and trainings which you have organized and participated in during your teaching career your achievements inclusive.
